BITC Scotland Director Alan Thornburrow reflects on his time to date with BITC and finds a committed organisation that has never been more relevant than now.
Towards the end of last year I attended our annual leadership summit in London. As a recent recruit to Business in the Community, it was the first time I had attended this event. Over the festive break I reflected upon just how powerfully this event demonstrated the shared purpose and strong leadership of the several hundred businesses we work with.
BITC has long led the way on putting responsible business at the heart of healthy communities and it is a purpose I believe in wholeheartedly. When the chance to join as Scotland Director came up last year I jumped at the opportunity to make a more meaningful contribution to public life in Scotland.
Although our world is in a state of upheaval with unprecedented wealth and rising inequality, politics of division and a narrative of disruption, what makes us whole is our humanity.
We display that in all that we achieve collectively but also in the every day in the acts of kindness and compassion we show each other and everyone who comes into contact with us.
I have never worked in an organisation with such purpose and opportunity to help make the communities we live in fairer and kinder. We are at the heart of a revolution in how business, society and capitalism interconnect. Our call to action has never been greater and the time never more opportune for BITC to provide the platform for change.
It has been an inspiring few months in post, witnessing the many impressive leaders we work with doing just that in pursuit of a fairer and more sustainable Scotland. Our staff and members have worked tirelessly towards that end and for that I say a sincere thank you.
We have a cohesive team, a clear strategy and purpose and a renewed sense of confidence which will help us do remarkable things in 2018. I couldn’t be prouder of all our achievements and am excited to share the road ahead with you.
