BITC responds to MOJ announcement about temporary release for prisoners

Following the announcement today by the Ministry of Justice that they will be extending temporary release for prisoners to help them return to the workforce after their release, Business in the Community have issued the follow announcement.
Jessica Rose, Business in the Community campaign manager, said:
“Today’s announcement that more prisoners will have access to work experience and paid work to help them reintegrate into society is a welcome step that we want to see extended even further. Attitudes are changing, with 79% of people now thinking that businesses employing ex-offenders are making a positive contribution to society.
“With hundreds of employers now offering direct employment to people with criminal convictions and opening up their mainstream recruitment channels to ex-offenders through Ban the Box, we believe these changes must pave the way for a more ambitious approach to reducing reoffending through employment. Release on Temporary Licence has been shown to reduce reoffending and the employers we work with see it is crucial for ex-offenders moving into employment on release. It enables prisoners to gain confidence interacting in the work environment and enables employers to give potential future employees a chance.”
