Leatherhead businesses inspire their future workforce

Six businesses in Leatherhead, Surrey combined forces to support 160 year 9 pupils from Therfield School by running a Careers Carousel, helping address a key need of the school by raising the aspirations of young people in and around Leatherhead. With youth unemployment a major issue across the UK businesses who form part of the Leatherhead Hub felt the need to take action.

It was a fantastic opportunity for us to be involved in such a worthwhile event that inspires the next generation and raises awareness of the full range of opportunities within our companies.

- Louise King,
The Careers Carousel was designed and scheduled to help students in considering their GCSE options. Local employers showcased a range of opportunities to young people including apprenticeships, sponsored degree programmes and graduate schemes. Hub partners including Wates, Intertek, Logica (now CGI), Legal & General, Mole Valley Housing Association and Menzies supported the event with a variety of fun and interactive stands.

Pupils were also offered the opportunity to take part in a ‘Speed Networking’ session, asking employees questions about their workplace, the type of jobs available, career paths and qualifications required.

Jeremy Garner Deputy Head at Therfield School said “It was fantastic that the businesses within this innovative collaborative “Hub” were so willing to attend and I am grateful to Business in the Community for designing and running the event. The students really benefitted from the experience and particularly enjoyed questioning the business representatives about their roles and engaging with the activities on each of the stands.”

The Careers Carousel forms part of a wider programme of activities at the school supported by Hub partners with future interventions including:  a Dragons Den style activity, Business Games Challenge Day, and an Employability Skills Workshop.
