Press release: ONS figures on people aged 50+ in the workplace - Companies should offer employees mid-life MOTs

In response to the ONS report published today on people aged 50+ in the workplaceAnne Willmot, age campaign director at Business in the Community, said:

“This report confirms the dramatically changing nature of the UK workforce, with the average age of employees increasing all the time.
“The number of employees aged 50-64 has shot up significantly in recent decades, while the percentage of people in work aged 65 and above has also more than doubled.
“That more women aged 60-64 are now employed than not employed for the first time ever highlights the extent of the change happening in the UK workforce.
"And what is really striking is the increase in the number of women in their early sixties working full time, which has almost doubled in the last 10 years
“We’re urging companies of all sizes to embrace the ageing workforce and to publish the number and percentage of older people they employ to show that they are tackling the issue head on.
"To support people to continue to work into their sixties and beyond if they need or choose to, they need to embrace flexible working policies and offer employees the opportunities for mid-life MOTs, so that people are fully equipped to make informed choices about their careers, their health and wellbeing and their finances.
"Responsible businesses are already preparing for both the challenges and opportunities that an ageing population will bring, and putting in place age-friendly policies to make the most of the deep structural change emerging in the UK workforce."
