“ Vauxhall immediately recognised how this project enthuses girls and boys into the science that is precision engineering. The young people are so proud to show their finished watch to friends and family. With the use of the Vauxhall Movano, Watch It Made can now roll out this great project to more schools and young people and can cover a large area of the country ”
Watch It Made started at Cranfield University in Bedfordshire as a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) activity to give young people an appreciation of precision engineering
Originally housed in a dedicated manufacturing learning studio on the Cranfield Campus Vauxhall has now enabled Watch It Made to to take the project to a national audience with the loan of a Vauxhall Movano van to transport the machinery.
In the project, pupils design their own watch from start to finish, selecting their own watch face and printing it using UV ink jet technology. They then get ‘hands-on’ experience by mounting their watch case in a precision lathe, operating it and seeing their watch body machined, before personalising the case using a micro-milling process.
Finally, the pupils assemble the manufactured watch components, together with the mechanism, hands, watch glass and strap, leaving with their own personalised timepiece.
