‘Creating a culture of respect is core to ensuring truly inclusive workplaces’: BITC responds to Lloyd’s of London culture advisory group announcement

A new culture advisory group will be announced today by Lloyd’s of London to tackle issues with sexual harassment and address issues in organisational culture.

Charlotte Woodworth, gender equality director at Business in the Community, responds:

“Everyone deserves to work free from harassment or discrimination. Sadly, we know many industries have a long way to go before they can honestly say they’ve looked long and hard at their culture, and taken meaningful action to address any problems.

“Creating a culture of respect is core to ensuring truly inclusive workplaces where everyone can flourish. Only when people feel confident of fair and equal treatment can businesses expect a speak-up culture. That means senior management setting the tone and making clear what behaviours are welcome, and what won’t be tolerated.

“This initiative from Lloyd’s has the potential to make real change; as more and more people wake up to the damage a poor working culture does to employees wellbeing and businesses’ bottom lines, we hope more employers will start to take action.”
