Gavin Patterson of Salesforce becomes chair of Prince’s Responsible Business Network
Business in the Community (BITC) – The Prince’s Responsible Business Network – announced today that Gavin Patterson, President and Chief Revenue Officer, Salesforce, has been appointed to serve as the charity’s chair. Jeremy Darroch, Group CEO, Sky, steps down at the end of his three-year tenure on 31 December 2020.
Founded almost 40 years ago, Business in the Community is dedicated to challenging companies to be more responsible in their impact on communities and the planet. Alongside its work on issues such as race, gender, the environment and employment, Business in the Community (BITC) launched the National Business Response Network (NBRN) this year as a way for business to directly support communities impacted by the fallout from COVID-19.
Gavin Patterson joins the charity after years of engagement with responsible business; as Chief Executive of BT Group, he oversaw the company’s pledge to become a net-zero-carbon business by 2045 and championed BT’s social purpose agenda launching a program to bring digital skills to five million primary school children, before joining Salesforce, a long-term champion of values-led leadership and business as a platform for change. He also served on the board of the charity Movement to Work and was a trustee of The British Museum.
During his time as chair, Jeremy Darroch has supported the development of the Responsible Business Tracker, the charity’s diagnostic tool for companies; brought together hundreds of chief executives to tackle climate change through the Waste to Wealth summit; and launched a powerful advisory group of corporate and business group leaders.
“For almost four decades, Business in the Community has been a beacon for businesses committed to improving their impact on society and I’m looking forward to putting my shoulder to the wheel,” said Gavin Patterson. “The pandemic has driven a once-in-a-lifetime moment for business to reset and reconsider the role it plays in society and the environment – this is business’ big opportunity to deliver positive change.”
Jeremy Darroch, Group CEO of Sky, said: “BITC is a brilliant organisation with the power to affect real change in the world and I’m pleased with the progress we have made over the last few years. The responsible business agenda is so important for business and society alike, and I’m optimistic that working with the superb new Chair, Gavin Patterson, BITC will continue to change lives and our collective future for the better in the years ahead.”
Amanda Mackenzie OBE, Chief Executive of Business in the Community, said: “Jeremy leaves some astonishingly large shoes to fill; as a business leader and on a personal level, few have done more to shape the agenda than him. However, everything I know about Gavin tells me that he is the right person to take on this challenge and help businesses to build back responsibly.”
