GDP contracts by 20%: ‘Time for businesses to build back responsibly’

The Office for National Statistics has announced that the UK’s gross domestic product (GDP) had shrunk by 20% in the previous quarter. Amanda Mackenzie OBE, Chief Executive of Business in the Community, responds:

“There is no avoiding the fact that this morning’s figures are alarming. However, we must not despair: now – in what might seem like our darkest moment – is the time for businesses to think about building back responsibly. Businesses have a chance to protect those that they can and make sure that they shore up against future disaster.

“I have faith that business will not abandon our communities in their moment of need because they have done so in the past; in the wake of 2008, we had a rush of support for The Prince’s Responsible Business Network because companies knew it had never mattered more. That’s the attitude we need now.”
