Our young people need a guarantee of jobs today, not the promise of hospitals or roads tomorrow
Following the announcement of Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s economic recovery plan, Nicola Inge, skills and employment director at Business in the Community says:
“Our young people need a guarantee of jobs today, not the promise of hospitals or roads tomorrow. Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s announcement of a £5bn plan to build our way out of recession is likely to fall short in providing a meaningful ‘opportunity guarantee’ for young people or tackling the skills crisis.
“The announcement of more hospitals, schools and roads as well as a ‘greener Britain’ was far from the radical plan needed in a rapidly shrinking economy where 42% of businesses are anticipating cutting jobs in the next 12 months and youth unemployment is expected to skyrocket.
“Business in the Community, along with more than 200 other organisations, called earlier this month for the government to tackle widening inequality by ensuring that those in the greatest need have jobs, training or education pathways. This requires a doubling of the capacity of services to help people move quickly into new jobs, money for retraining and developing essential skills and investment in job creation, especially in the green economy.
“We will be watching to see whether Rishi Sunak’s announcement next week provides any of the necessary funding to make this a reality.”
