Once in employment, veterans benefit from time and support to adapt to a civilian work environment.

Businesses can help by providing training and resources aimed at supporting the inclusion of veterans and reservists in the workplace.

Practical steps

  • Establish an internal military network for veterans, reservists and military spouses – helping to provide support and drive the agenda forward within the business

  • Develop a mentor programme or champion network to help induct new recruits into the business

  • Created armed forces-friendly HR policies, such as flexible leave for reservist employees or veterans dealing with health issues

  • Encourage suppliers and customers to adopt armed forces-friendly recruitment practices

Case study

Gentoo established ‘Gentoo Armed Forces Veterans Group’ made up of veterans, reservists and military spouses, who meet once a month and advise the business on how to further support ex-service personnel throughout Sunderland. Based on feedback from the Veterans Group, Gentoo developed new internal policies, such as short notice leave for military family members.
