By 2020, Kingspan Group aims to effectively take no energy from the national grid by becoming energy neutral. As well as using renewable energy to save money, the firm will be fighting climate change.
Good for business
- Becoming a new-zero energy firm brings a wide variety of benefits. One is that less expensive fuel will be used so firms save money.
- Taking a lead in this way has helped to establish the Kingspan Group as thought leaders in area of environmental businesses.
Good for the environment
- Reducing carbon emissions makes for cleaner air and reduces the firm’s contribution to climate change. From 2011 to 2014 the North Wales facility’s carbon dioxide emissions went from 6,375 tCO2 to 2,626 tCO2.
- Using sustainable energy such as solar power, greatly reduces the dependency on planet-damaging fossil fuels.
Top tips from Kingspan Group:
Before starting an energy reduction project it is important to set clear targets and reporting structures.
Employee participation and commitment is essential. It is critical to get people in the business on board.
When looking at the value of a project, evaluate long-term as well as short-term benefits and don’t miss out on any consequential improvements that are not always obvious.
In 2011, the Kingspan Group committed to becoming a Net-Zero Energy company by 2020. For Kingspan, Net-Zero Energy means that its facilities are energy neutral across the entire Kingspan estate over the period of a year. This energy neutrality will be achieved by a combination of on-site renewable energy generation (including export to the supply grids), off-site renewable energy generation (related directly to Kingspan) and the use of energy from renewable sources.
The elimination of carbon dioxide emissions from Kingspan Group’s operations also reduces air pollution. Less air pollution means that Kingspan can pride itself on having little or no impact on the ozone layer as well as not contributing to climate change.
The biggest division within Kingspan Group is Kingspan Insulated Panels, the global leader in the design, development and delivery of advanced building insulation.
In addition to the elimination of CO2 emissions, all of Kingspan Insulated Panel’s sites across the UK and Ireland are ‘Zero Waste to Landfill’, and so do not contribute to the burden of land, water and air pollution from landfill sites.
Kingspan Insulated Panels is committed to delivering sustainable, energy saving solutions for buildings while operating within a sustainable ecosystem. The priority is to stakeholders, particularly customers, employees, consumers and communities.
