Veterans employment: the case of FDM Group

FDM Group is a global professional service provider with a focus on IT. They launched their Ex-Forces Programme in the UK in 2014, helping veterans bridge the gap between the military and commerical world.

FDM Group is a global professional service provider with a focus on IT. They are the UK’s leading IT graduate employer, employing over to 1,000 graduates a year.

Following the success of their Veterans Initiative in the US, FDM launched the Ex-Forces Programme in the UK in 2014. The Programme bridges the gap between leaving the Forces and the commercial world providing training, support and commercial experience. Since the launch, the FDM Ex-Forces Programme has placed 142 service leavers on-site with their client base.

The fully funded programme offers two training routes:

  1. The traditional route: aimed at junior ex-military personnel from a technical background with an interest in IT. The training lasts for 8-12 weeks and helps trainees to develop professional skills and commercial awareness.

  2. The advanced route: aimed at Senior NCOs, Warrant Officers and Officers who have a demonstrable management experience. This is a six-week training course with a focus on Project Management.

Once trainees complete the training they start a two year employment contract with FDM and will be placed on-site with one of FDM’s clients. After the two years, Consultants can decide to continue their career with FDM or transition to the client.

Insight Days are held monthly at FDM’s Centres in London, Leeds and Glasgow to help ex-military personnel find out more about the Programme. The Programme is run by a team of ex-Forces personnel who understand the value of military experience and are able to offer support to Service leavers transitioning into civilian employment.

Retd. Colonel Stewart Sharman, Head of the Ex Forces Programme at FDM says, “I am incredibly proud of the work we have done to secure and support incredible career opportunities for a diverse set of Service leavers across the UK. Not only have we enabled a foot in the door across a wide range of top tier clients, but critically we also deliver relevant training.

The programme has been a great success employing all ranks with seven individuals having just accepted permanent roles with clients at the end of their placement. The differentiator at FDM is that we bridge the gap between the Forces and the corporate world, but also continue to support individuals throughout their time with FDM.”

Business benefits of hiring ex-military personnel:

  • FDM’s unique business model provides an accessible route into a commercial career for service leavers as well as a healthy talent pipeline of highly motivated individuals for their clients.

  • Ex-Forces Consultants are able to think out of the box; are flexible; reliable; and calm under pressure. They have excellent team working and communication skills and consistently receive positive feedback from clients as well as a number of promotions.

  • FDM has received several awards and positive recognition for their work supporting the ex-Forces community.

Other ways FDM supports the ex-Forces community:

  • FDM signed the Ministry of Defence Armed Forces Corporate Covenant in 2014, pledging to support the British Armed Forces.

  • They have partnered with British Forces Resettlement Services (BFRS), a non-profit organisation working to support the ex-Service community during their career transition.

  • They work closely with the Career Transition Partnership (CTP), Officer’s Association (OA) and The White Ensign Association to advertise employment opportunities.
