Japan Tobacco Inc. (JT) (TSE: 2914) has published the JT Group Sustainability Report FY2014, outlining its sustainability initiatives and performance for the year ending 31st December, 2014.
Highlights
  • Accelerated the development of a Group-wide sustainability strategy, a process that began in 2012.
  • Established a Group-wide anti-bribery process.
  • JT Group's international tobacco was recognised as a Top Employer in 33 companies around the world, including the top 3 position in Europe.
  • Withdrew 5,470 children from child labor in Brazil, Malawi and Zambia thanks to the ARISE program, which helps tobacco farmers send their children to school.
  • Achieved a 12.6% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions over the baseline of financial year 2009, putting the Group well on track to achieving its 20% reduction target for 2020.
  • Set up a global team to focus on bringing together all functions and know-how in the area of emerging products.
  • In the U.K., JT Group's youth access prevention program of more than 6,000 test purchases led to a 7% increase in the number of retailers requesting ID.
  • Invested ¥8,923 million in corporate citizenship and community activities.

"As a global company, we have many impacts, some big, some less significant. To make a real difference on sustainability, we need to focus on tackling the bigger issues - and to do so across our entire value chain, from the starting point where our raw materials are sourced to the end point where our products are thrown away.

This means we must take measures to exert our positive influence and to reduce our negative impacts, not just in areas where we have direct control and involvement - such as manufacturing and marketing - but in spheres where we only have indirect influence, such as with suppliers and consumers."
