The Connected Places Award: Samworth Brothers

Longlisted for a Business in the Community Responsible Business Award 2018.

Action and Impact
While Leicester is deemed to be one of the most vibrant and entrepreneurial cities in the UK, it is also ranked within the 10% most-deprived local authorities in England.

Samworth Brothers is a family-run food manufacturing business with eight sites in the city, employing more than 5,500 people. A recent economic impact study shows the company’s activities, including that of its supply chain, accounts for one in 20 jobs in Leicester.

In line with their values and specifically to help young disadvantaged people the business has developed a Sports Opportunity Fund. This fund identifies projects that support the social and economic development of the area by helping young people develop confidence, self-esteem and boost their life skills through sport. The project, which has seen Samworth Brothers award £732,000 to clubs in the city since late 2013, has been a big success.

Of those recipient clubs, 92% say the Fund has allowed them to increase the number of people it has helped – and 35% had increased the number of individuals they had been able to support by 50-100%. “Our aim is to help young people fulfil their potential and gain experience that will help them in all aspects of their life, using sport as the catalyst,” says Mark Samworth, the group executive chairman.
