Action and Impact
“Defending the environment” is at the heart of Midcounties Co-operative’s Social Responsibility strategy. As such, it is achieved operational eco-efficiency gains running in excess of £1.5 million a year thanks to a programme of energy savings and recycling initiatives. The company, which is the largest independent Co-operative in the UK with more than 500 trading sites, is recycling 97% of its waste (up from 21% in 2009), diverting over 3,000 tonnes of waste from landfill a year.

Midcounties Co-operative has also developed a successful co-operative energy offering that is “one of the most important deliverers of citizen-backed, low carbon energy in the UK,” according to Ben Reid, the company’s chief executive. 100% of electricity provided by Co-op Energy is sourced from renewables, with over 33,000 MWh of energy being provided. Through Co-operative Energy Saving, the company has helped members reduce their energy bills by over £30,000, saving 440,000 kwh of electricity.

Elsewhere, the Midcounties Co-operative food retail business sold more than £53 million of its ethical food range last year.
