Action and Impact
The results of Samworth Brothers’ 4R Plan to boost environmental awareness and implement initiatives that would lower its carbon footprint, makes for impressive reading. The company, producing chilled and ambient food products in premises across the UK, has been focusing on reducing, reusing, recycling and recovering to reduce its environmental impact, be a sustainable business, raise environmental awareness amongst its supply chain and be an efficient business.

So far, the plan is working. It has introduced telematics information to improve driving efficiency, saving 800,000 litres of fuel. Around 334 tonnes of surplus food is redistributed for human consumption – that’s 795,254 meals. In fact, all food waste across the business (20,000 tonnes) goes to make pet food, animal food or to be anaerobically digested to make energy.

Samworth Brothers has also invested in rain water harvesting, heat regeneration and heat recovery systems, increased recycling to 78% (with the remaining 23% recovered for energy) and gets 100% of its grid electricity from renewable energy sources.

In return, the company’s climate change initiatives delivered hundreds of thousands of pounds in savings in 2016-17.
