The Environmental Sustainability Award: Yorkshire Water

Longlisted for a Business in the Community Responsible Business Award

Action and Impact
Yorkshire Water’s imaginative programme to manage the water environment across the region has reaped business benefits as well as reputational ones.  Neatly demonstrating what is possible when you go beyond the obvious. From looking at how it can remediate and reuse operational land and restore natural habitats, to exploring innovative farming practices and widening access for people who are less able, the company hopes that the changes it makes to our land will be the legacy it creates for future generations. “We’re proud to improve this beautiful part of the world by thinking differently,” says the company.

The company, part of the Kelda Group, provides water and waste water services to five million domestic customers and 140,000 business premises in the Yorkshire region. It collects, treats and distributes around 1.3 billion litres of drinking water every day.

Its approach to sustainable water management includes managing land and using sustainable land use practices, for example, limiting the use of pesticides. It also makes sure it improves and increases habitat for birds and enhances biodiversity. By improving water quality through better land management and farming practices, dealing with the same water requires less intensive treatment, keeping costs down for both the business and its customers.
