The Fujitsu Digital Innovation Award: Certas Energy UK Ltd

Award Type:

Longlisted for a Business in the Community Responsible Business Award 2018

According to the National Institute of Clinical Excellence, every year there are 40,000 avoidable winter deaths in the UK. More than 80% of these deaths are of people aged 75 and over.
The Cold Weather Priority (CWP) is the response being led by Certas Energy.  It is an initiative that identifies people who may be susceptible to colder conditions, enabling fuel suppliers across the UK to know exactly who may be at risk.  This means that they can take pro-active steps to make sure fuel gets delivered to these groups as a priority in times of fuel shortage or extreme cold weather.

The scheme, which costs customers nothing to be a part of, also works collaboratively with the National Fire Chiefs’ Council to build CWP referrals into local fire and rescue services.

“CWP combines groundbreaking data usage and cross sector collaboration with leading edge safeguards and system controls to deliver a benefit to those most vulnerable to cold weather,” says Steve Taylor, Certas’ managing director. “We have developed an identification process and systems infrastructure so that all of our 2,500 employees are aware who falls into the category and why.  This means we can prioritise deliveries to them in times of extreme cold weather and or supply shortage.” Since August 2017, 15,000 households have been protected by CWP.
