ACT Training is Wales’ largest training provider, welcoming over 6,500 people through its doors each year. With alternatives to formal education and a comprehensive training and further education offering, it works with people from all backgrounds – but also commits to being a responsible business by engaging with communities, schools and supporting its staff.

Wider benefits

Over the past three decades, ACT Training has been delivering traineeships, apprenticeships and higher-level apprenticeships; helping make a positive difference to people’s lives, regardless of their background. This is the day job – which is delivered to an incredibly high standard, recognised by the increase in delivery of Welsh Government contracts and recognition by external schemes such as Investors in People and Sunday Times Best Companies listing.

After leaving school at 15, Andrew Cooksley (Chief Executive Officer) started the company at the age of 22. Having left school without any qualifications, Andrew brings his personal life experience to the approach ACT Training takes to supporting employees and working with young people who are at risk of falling out of conventional, traditional routes of education or employment.

Over recent years, ACT Training has brought together its responsible business practices under three areas – delivering inspirational learning programmes, developing the team and networking; and improving the future of the business and communities which they serve.

The team has set a clear vision and sets of targets under each of these areas, allowing them to focus on what they do and do it to a high standard. The introduction of these targets has been supported by a new monitoring and data collection system, Vision, which allows monthly reporting to the Advisory Committee and Board of Directors. Through the provision of quality learning experiences, ACT Training is supporting the socio-economic health of Wales, but it also engages with its employees and the communities in which the business is based. ACT makes up to 5 days of volunteering leave available for all its employees, empowering them to take part in large scale projects such as BITC Cymru’s Give & Gain or smaller individual fundraising projects and at a corporate level works with charities Llamau, Bobath and Tenovus Cancer Care.

ACT Training is taking a joined-up coherent approach to responsible business, aligned to their three key business priorities. The business leadership is committed to making a difference to people’s lives through the provision of quality learning experiences, but also by putting its people at the very core of what it does.

ACT Training is a well-deserving winner of the BITC Cymru Responsible Large Business of the Year Award.
