Almost 30% of UK businesses do not know how much of their IT budget is spent on business continuity, sometimes referred to as ‘keeping the lights on’. Most businesses now rely on their IT systems to operate normally.

That is certainly the view of Databarracks, an organisation based in an ex military bunker, that provides disaster recovery-backup and business continuity.  If a business is hit by fire, flooding or a cyber attack that prevents them from being able to operate, Databarracks can protect them against sudden and immediate revenue loss and the possible reputational damage that could ensue.

The company, which has supported more than 10,000 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) has won the Barclays Developing Resilience category at this year’s Responsible Business of the Year Awards thanks to the help and support it continues to give to SMEs.

Alongside its package of solutions that protect and maintain business as usual for SMEs, the company has been applauded for its engagement and communication in highlighting the benefits of business continuity, as well as the pitfalls of not having a plan of action in place.

At the heart of this is the Databarracks Business Continuity podcast which offers real life experiences through case study interviews that help to advise organisations on improving their resilience against disruption. The podcast is aimed at small businesses that do not necessarily know anything about business continuity planning. It also delves into areas that are not just technology-focused. For example, a recent episode looked at the human vulnerability risk of cyber attacks. 

They have also published a series of free online tools – now used by more than 3,000 people a year. One of this tools is a simulator to take businesses through different disruptive events with best practice being recommended at the end of each scenario. 

“We’re passionate about providing business continuity to the UK’s SME market – and providing tools and information to help educate SMEs on the fundamentals of business continuity.  It is part of our social responsibility,” says Peter Groucutt, the company’s Managing Director.

It’s an approach that is clearly helping to drive the business forward, building loyalty and customers along the way. The company’s sales team use the tools in meetings with potential customers, showing them exactly how to improve resilience. “We don’t expect every listener of the podcast to become an immediate customer, but we are happy that we have made a difference for that business to be more resilient,” adds Groucutt.

“Since the release of the tools, we have had our two most successful years in business.”
