Principality Building Society is the largest building society in Wales, working with communities and serving Members for over 150 years. Community and membership engagement is at the heart of what the business does and as a result, partnerships with schools across Wales (through the Business Class programme) is a natural extension of the work it does.
Business Class is a BITC programme that is delivered across Wales by BITC Cymru and partners. Principality has been involved in Business Class for a number of years, but has done more than just deliver the programme.
With the company’s unique reach and footprint in communities across Wales – and operations that allow the company to bring fantastic learning experiences into schools (such as sports broadcast and filming sessions) – Principality has super-charged its engagement with young people, schools and teachers. Building on the company’s original engagement with Llanishen High in Cardiff, Principality branched out and now has partnerships with Tonypandy Community College, Ysgol y Grango, Ysgol y Strade and Bro Myrddin.
The scale of operations that Principality is involved with require a strategic approach. As well as working with the schools on a needs-led basis, Principality has also brought its business priorities to bear. This has specifically focussed on financial education, financial literacy and engagement with sport.
Principality’s association with all levels of rugby in Wales means the business has a nearly unrivalled ability to bring sports-related opportunities into the classroom. This results in higher levels of engagement from pupils and creates unique moments for them – such as applying broadcasting and filming training to running the digital component of Principality’s Annual General Meeting in 2018.
In addition to providing new skills and experiences for over 6,500 young people across Wales, Principality is looking to the future. It is focussing on the financial literacy of the next generation of Principality customers whilst at the same time helping to safeguard the financial wellbeing of Welsh young people.
For the broad scope of the programme and positive benefits being delivered in schools across Wales, Principality Building Society is the deserving winner of the NPTC Group of Colleges Education Award.
