Responsible Business Tracker® Dashboard

What is the Responsible Business Tracker®?

The Responsible Business Tracker® (the Tracker) is Business in the Community’s (BITC) scored measurement tool. It is linked to our Responsible Business Map which is underpinned by the United Nations (UN) Global Goals, also known as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

As a self-assessment survey tool, the Tracker enables detailed understanding of your business’ responsible business performance. It allows benchmarking against cohort and sector peers, and offers recognition opportunities for examples of business best practice, improvement, and innovation. Insights from the Tracker form a barometer of responsible business across the UK.

How to use the Responsible Business Tracker® Dashboard

Scores by sector

The graph shows the average overall score by sector group. The dotted line indicates the cohort average overall score.

Materiality

The Tracker is based on the concept of materiality and impact. Materiality is a concept that defines why and how certain issues are important for a company or a business sector. A material issue can have a major impact on the financial, economic, reputational, and legal aspects of a company, as well as on the system of internal and external stakeholders of that company1.

Areas of materiality are priority issues for participants and are at the heart of their responsible business strategy. Weighting of the outer map sections is based on the business’ materiality ranking.

The two graphs show how Tracker participants have ranked responsible business issues in order of materiality. The issues referred to are the outer map areas of BITC’s Responsible Business Map.

  • The top graph shows the issue areas by average materiality ranking.
  • The bottom graph shows the percentage of Tracker participants that chose each issue area for each ranking.

The default view shows the overall material ranking across the cohort. You can change to a sector view by choosing a sector from the drop-down list at the bottom of the dashboard.

Responsible Business Map area scores

The Tracker is based upon BITC’s Responsible Business Map which is underpinned by the United Nations (UN) Global Goals, also known as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The inner map questions assess the extent to which businesses are integrating responsible business into their business model. The outer map questions, ranked by materiality, build on this, and assess the extent to which businesses are creating societal and environmental value.

The graphs below show the average scores for each section of the Map:

  • The top graph shows the inner map areas.
  • The bottom graph shows the outer map areas.

The default view shows the average scores across the cohort. You can change to a sector view by choosing a sector from the drop-down list at the bottom of the dashboard.

The Responsible Business Tracker® Dashboard

Why have we created the Responsible Business Tracker® Dashboard?

  • The first tab shows the average score of Tracker participants by sector.
  • The second tab shows how the Tracker participants have ranked key responsible business issues in terms of materiality.
  • The third tab shows the average scores of Tracker participants by issue area.

The Responsible Business Tracker® Dashboard is for use by Tracker participants and for any business or individual interested in responsible business.

The dashboard shows high-level data from our latest Tracker cohort, who completed submissions in 2021.

Methodology

The Responsible Business Tracker® is a mix of scored and unscored questions, with the latter providing narrative and context.

To calculate section and overall score, each section on the Responsible Business Map is weighted. The outer map areas are weighted depending on the business’ self-declared materiality ranking. The inner map areas are weighted based on the importance and size of those sections.

The Tracker is predominantly a self-assessment tool, but is complemented by a rigorous assessment process to validate the responses against the narrative and evidence provided by participants.

We intend to update and improve this dashboard as we gain more data, and we welcome your feedback, which you can provide by clicking the blue ‘feedback’ button at the top of the dashboard. Alternatively you can contact the Responsible Business Tracker® team by email.
