What we do

What we do

Business in the Community is the UK’s largest and longest-established responsible business network, championing sustainability, inclusion, and growth that benefits both business and society. We bring companies together to lead responsibly, collaborate for systemic change, and take action locally and nationally to build a fairer, greener, and more resilient future.

Driving responsible growth for people, place and planet

Business in the Community (BITC) champions responsible business as essential for long term economic growth and resilience. We convene, campaign, and consult with business to tackle society’s most pressing challenges from climate change and place-based community regeneration to inequality, workplace wellbeing, and inclusive growth.

BITC empowers its members to:

  • Lead responsibly by embedding purpose and sustainability into strategy.
  • Collaborate across sectors to drive systemic change
  • Act locally and nationally to support communities and unlock opportunity

Founded by His Majesty King Charles III in 1982, Business in the Community has over four decades of experience in engaging business and delivering measurable impact in both business and in communities through evidence-based interventions. As a trusted partner to business and government, Business in the Community convenes leadership, influences policy, and accelerates action, helping shape a future-ready economy that works for everyone.

Today, BITC has 600+ member companies of all sizes across the UK.

Our focus

Our vision as an organisation is for responsible business to be the foundation for economic growth. Our mission is to convene, campaign and consult to deliver economic, social and environmental change.

Our work focuses on three interconnected areas that define responsible business in the UK: People, Place, and Planet. Through these, we help businesses tackle society’s most pressing challenges, from climate change and place-based regeneration to inequality, workplace wellbeing, and inclusive growth.

People

We equip businesses to take action on inclusion, wellbeing, and skills development, creating workplaces that support all people to succeed and progress.

Place

We bring businesses together with local partners to create jobs, strengthen communities, and drive lasting economic opportunity.

Planet

We mobilise businesses to cut emissions, protect nature, and accelerate the transition to a sustainable future.

Our impact goals

Every young person and jobseeker feels supported and has clear pathways into work

The future depends on providing people with the opportunities they need to thrive, and this year we’ve helped thousands of people facing significant barriers into work, including programmes to address skill gaps and job coaching to connect UK businesses with jobseekers.

Every employer invests in the skills necessary for today and tomorrow, creating workplaces where everyone can grow and reach their potential

From our Race at Work Charter with over 1,000 businesses signatories, to our emerging work on AI, we continue to bring businesses together to champion and challenge for greater impact.

Every community has a shared sense of pride and hope, with support to build and deliver a strong, collective vision of a fairer tomorrow

We are currently driving real change on the ground in 16 places through our Pride of Place programme, with our ambition to transform 50 places by 2032.
