Pride of Place Learning Hub

Pride of Place Learning Hub

Make change happen

Welcome to your one-stop shop for effective placemaking, created by Business in the Community and supported by Aviva. This Learning Hub comprises a range of ‘modules’ designed to help you drive lasting change in places across the UK through BITC’s Pride of Place programme.

Whilst placemaking does not usually follow a linear process, our Learning Hub is arranged into sections (or ‘phases’) to help you progress from wanting to know more about BITC’s place-based approach, through to setting up a Board, identifying objectives, and building a lasting local partnership. Each of these phase pages is broken down further into bite-sized ‘modules’ to help guide you to easily find the information you need, when you need it. These resources are suitable for people leading on a Pride of Place partnership, as well as public, corporate, and voluntary sector leaders who are already, or planning to be, involved in one.

On this page you can find out more about what is involved in each phase of the placemaking process and information to help you work out the best place to start your learning.

How to use the Pride of Place Learning Hub

  • ‘The five phases of placemaking’ section, below, is the heart of our learning hub. Here, you will get an overview of each placemaking phase and can access a page dedicated to each phase. These pages are packed full of information to guide you on your placemaking journey.

THE 2026

Pride of Place Summit

Through convening leaders from across sectors to share knowledge and experience, we can deepen our understanding of the most pressing challenges facing our communities, explore how we can work together to overcome them, and drive collective action. Modules in this Learning Hub will be continuously updated from most recent learnings, including pending updates from discussions facilitated at the Pride of Place Summit in June 2026.

This phase will help you secure a sustainable legacy for your Pride of Place partnership and offer opportunities to share evidence and learning with other placemakers.

Where should I begin?

Review our suggested starting points below, and, if you still need help, connect with us for guidance on where best to begin.

If you are new to placemaking we would recommend starting from the beginning – Phase One: Before You Start. This will give you an overview of some of the key concepts and principles associated with placemaking.

If you are already involved in a Pride of Place partnership and looking to recruit a Place Lead, visit Phase Two: Appointing a Place Lead which includes some useful resources.

If you are a funder considering supporting a Pride of Place project, Phase Two: Funding Your Place and Phase Two: Being a Place Funder provide everything you need to know about what is involved and give you the chance to learn about the experiences of other funders.

If you are a business which has been invited to consider joining a Pride of Place Board, or would like to find out more about what is involved, Phase Three: Being a Board Member guides you through the expectations and rewarding potential of supporting a place in this way.

If you are already involved in, or leading, an active Pride of Place partnership then we suggest skipping to modules that feel closest to where you are in the process, assessing your progress against these to guide you. Business in the Community can work with you to assess your progress and provide guidance if required. For more assistance, get in touch with the Place Team below.
