Background
We established a Pride of Place Board in Bristol in 2025, on which Aviva is represented by Stuart Beaver, Head of Social Action. The Bristol Pride of Place Board has set an initial focus on driving inclusive employment. In the short term, this has involved supporting young people and adults by amplifying key education and employment programmes in Bristol. As the Bristol Pride of Place Board look ahead to establishing long-term strategic priorities, a key focus is exploring how best to remove barriers to employment for people facing disadvantage, as well as how to engage employers around the city to encourage inclusive employment practice.
Hartcliffe & Withywood is likely to chosen as an initial area of deep dive, Located in South Bristol, it is the most deprived ward in Bristol, with nine LSOAās (lower super output areas) in the top 10% most deprived nationally, including two that rank in the top 1%. The ward has the lowest educational attainment rates alongside the highest rate of youth unemployment in the city. The Board have been collaborating closely with the local VCSE sector, Bristol City Council, and the West of England Combined Authority, to ensure a coordinated approach, combining short term action with a view to long term, sustainable impact.
