The Times Top 50 Employers for Gender Equality 2023 announced

Business in the Community, The Prince’s Responsible Business Network, has today announced The Times Top 50 Employers for Gender Equality for 2023. The Times Top 50 Employers for Gender Equality is the UK’s most well-established and highly profiled list of companies who are committed to taking action to ensure gender equality in the workplace.

The awards, free to enter and open to all UK employers, ask organisations to share details of their activity, and any demonstrable impact, around key areas known to help or hinder progress towards gender equality at work. These include their approach to recruitment, for example including salary details as standard, how they apply an intersectional lens, such as considering ethnicity pay gaps not just gender pay gaps, and efforts to support working carers following BITC research which found nearly half of the UK workforce is combining paid work with caring responsibilities. In addition to reviewing anonymised submissions, assessors also spoke with female employees to gauge the real-life experience of working at applicant organisations. This year’s Times Top 50 Employers for Gender Equality includes those companies who have committed to embedding gender equality for employees at all levels of their organisations and are challenging others to follow their example.

This year’s list also looked at what employers are doing to support employees as the cost-of-living crisis sees rising inflation, interest rates, and the price of day-to-day items remaining high. Applicants were asked to submit a case study alongside their application, focused on the steps they were taking to support people during times of financial challenge.

The name of the list, previously The Times Top 50 Employers for Women, has been updated this year to emphasise that addressing gender equality in the workplace requires engagement from everyone to achieve equality for all – and that women are not one homogenous group. BITC’s gender equality work focuses on equality for all genders and those who do not identify as a gender.

Charlotte Woodworth, Gender Equality Director at Business in the Community, said:

“The companies in The Times Top 50 Employers for Gender Equality for 2023 are leading the way towards gender equality in the workplace, showing true commitment to driving fairer and more inclusive work environments for all employees. We’ve seen the tide change in recent years in how many employers are embracing innovative ways of working such as flexible working, and more equitable policies such as equal parental leave.

“While it’s right to celebrate those companies who are going above and beyond what regulation requires and throwing out the rulebook on traditional ways of working, there is still work to be done to build workplace cultures where every single employee, regardless of their gender identity, can thrive. With the cost-of-living crisis laying bare the imbalance of the impact of economic turmoil on different groups, there’s never been a more important time for employers to consider the role that their organisation plays in our collective goal of creating a fairer world for everyone.”
