The Circular Office Guide

The Circular Office Guide

The Circular Office Guide show organisations how to retain the value of materials, by keeping them in circulation and eliminating waste in their workplaces. It contains useful information for everyone involved with offices including: landlords, tenants, property managers, facilities managers, procurement teams and employees. It is relevant to large and small organisations from all sectors, from professional services to retailers and manufacturers.

A circular office designs out waste and retains the maximum possible value of resources for as long as possible. The life-cycle of products and materials is considered from the outset, from procurement, through usage, to the end of service life. A circular office approach provides a perfect starting point for organisations keen to drive change towards a circular economy. This guide draws on the expertise of Business in the Community’s (BITC) Circular Economy Taskforce, and experiences from a range of organisations to guide people starting to create circular offices.

The Circular Office Guide covers:

  • identifying opportunities, from reducing resource consumption, to procuring circular products and services, and eliminating or reusing waste
  • establishing your starting point, prioritising actions and deciding on your level of ambition
  • engaging internally and externally with senior management, staff, suppliers and other stakeholders.

Business in the Community’s Circular Office Initiative

BITC’s Circular Office Initiative brings businesses together to learn, share, and try new ideas to bring the circular economy to life in their offices. It is about changing how we design, use and operate to eliminate waste and create more efficient, resilient spaces. These spaces will contribute to the long term sustainability of businesses and the wider economy and the positive wellbeing of occupants. It is a change in mindset from sourcing products from virgin resources and throwing things away to looking for opportunities to regenerate items. Opportunities range from: refurbishing and reusing office furniture and equipment; reducing and recycling food and packaging; achieving greater resource circularity in the design and refurbishment and repurposing of offices.
