Nature-based Solutions to the Climate Emergency – IGNITION project

Curating the findings of the nature based solutions evidence base this report maps the benefits across key areas.

The ‘Nature-based solutions to the climate emergency: The benefits to business and society’ report is the first business-facing resource created by the IGNITION project, produced in partnership with UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) and Greater Manchester Combined Authorities (GMCA).

Nature-based Solutions (NBS)

This report curates findings from the nature-based solutions evidence base, to outline how Nature-based Solutions (NBS) can benefit business and building performance; helping organisations make smarter choices on installations by increasing the understanding of who will benefit and how. We have mapped the benefits of NBS across key impact areas: Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation; Resource Use; Nature and Biodiversity; Health and Wellbeing; and Socioeconomic Impact.

BITC is one of 12 partners on the IGNITION project, alongside organisations from local government, universities, and NGOs. Supported by €4.5 million from the EU’s Urban Innovation Actions initiative, this ground-breaking project aims to develop innovative financing solutions for investment in Greater Manchester’s natural environment. This investment will help to build the city region’s ability to adapt to the increasingly extreme impacts of climate change.

As BITC works with our members to speed up and scale up the scope of business climate action through Challenge 2030, the Ignition project will provide vital resources and knowledge to ensure nature-based solutions form a pillar of climate adaptation.

CHALLENGE 2030 – make the climate crisis history

COVID-19 has shown how people and nature are inter-connected. The need for a concerted global response to shared risks and catalysed business leadership has been highlighted. This response will find solutions and support communities. The pandemic has been described by some as a ‘dress rehearsal’ for the climate crisis – the biggest collective challenge we face.  As we restart the economy we have a unique opportunity to build back responsibly.
