Working in partnership with employees, employers can take a positive, preventative and proactive approach to support sleep and recovery. Business in the Community (BITC), in partnership with Public Health England (PHE) have produced the first ever sleep and recovery toolkit. The document includes information, resources and practical actions employers can take to maximise employee energy. 200,000 working days lost in the UK each year due to insufficient sleep1 and in three people in the UK are affected by insomnia2. The annual cost of sleep loss to the UK is £40 billion3. The toolkit offers insight and advice on addressing the increasingly damaging sleep-loss epidemic affecting the nation.

We spend about a third of our lives asleep and the multiple risks of sleep deprivation are well documented. This toolkit provides practical information for all employers on how you can create an environment where employees understand the importance of sleep and recovery, and are able to make healthier choices at work and at home. It also contains specific advice for small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). SMEs can be disproportionately affected by the loss of key staff because of illness, or when they are unable to perform to the best of their ability because of fatigue. So, helping employees to maintain healthy sleep patterns and to recover fully after a period of sleep deprivation, is of vital importance.

Many of the points are simple to implement, supported by resources that are free or inexpensive. The crucial element is a commitment to support the health and wellbeing of the organisation by fostering an open and inclusive culture.

Crisis Management In The Event Of A Suicide: A Postvention Toolkit For Employers, developed with support from Samaritans, offers practical advice for employers to follow in the aftermath of an employee suicide.

Domestic Abuse Toolkit. This toolkit, sponsored by The Insurance Charities, provides support and guidance for employers in responding to the risk of domestic abuse.

Drugs, Alcohol and Tobacco: A Toolkit For Employers. Supporting your employees wellbeing to reduce sickness, absence, and improve mental wellbeing and productivity.

Mental Health for Employers Toolkit. This toolkit helps employers select the most valuable resources, and  to develop an approach that works. For larger organisations, the toolkit is also a useful resource to share with businesses in their supply chain and across their network.

Good musculoskeletal (MSK) health is integral to a full working life. It supports us with functional mobility and dexterity, balance and coordination, and contributes to muscular strength and endurance; essential to nearly all forms of work. It also enables us to stay physically and mentally fit and reduce the occurrence of other health problems. Action should be taken at all ages to invest in enhancing education, awareness and opportunities to engage in understanding good MSK health and how to reduce the risks of developing an MSK problem.
