Better Through Total Collaboration Creates a Lasting Legacy
Our member Better Through Total Collaboration (BTTC) is a high-performance project consultancy with a vision of transforming the infrastructure industry. Business in the Community’s (BITC) Job Coaching Programme has played an integral part in helping the organisation achieve its strategic goals.
How has our Job Coaching Programme supported BTTC’s goals?
BTTC has a five-year strategic plan, created with input from the whole organisation. Two key strategic goals are leaving a lasting legacy and being passionate about our people. The organisation wanted to combine these two values by giving back to its community through volunteering. After conducting thorough research, BTTC set up a meeting with BITC to explore potential opportunities. Rhiannan Price, BTTC’s Operations Director, believes that the Job Coaching Programme aligns perfectly with the organisation’s overall vision and strategic goals, which was the catalyst for BTTC joining the programme. The hope was that employees could see how coaching aligns with BTTC’s vision and give something back to their community at the same time.
Our organisation comprises various specialisms, from commercial managers to project managers. Understanding these diverse roles enables us to provide tailored guidance through the Job Coaching programme.
Rhiannon Price, Operations Director, Better Through Collaboration.
How has our Job Coaching programme inspired BTTC?
26 BTTC employees have volunteered through the Job Coaching programme to date, supporting a variety of individuals, such as refugees, the long-term unemployed, over 50s returning to the workplace, young people, and carers. One volunteer explained the positive changes she’d seen throughout the programme:
“[She] has improved her employability by effectively highlighting her skills and experiences on her CV, leading to her successfully applying for a role. She now approaches job applications and interviews with confidence and is open to learning new skills to help advance her career.”
The organisation began moving away from traditional recruitment practices in 2016. Instead of hiring individuals with a particular degree or set of qualifications, BTTC now focuses on the personality and resilience of candidates, furthering its goal to be passionate about its people. To date, two-thirds of its employees have been hired through graduate recruitment days or direct recommendations, due to their values and demonstrated behaviours, rather than their university or prior experience.
The Job Coaching programme has helped the organisation recognise the benefits of diversifying its workforce. As a result, BTTC is now looking at ways it could support some of the individuals that employees coached on the programme to gain opportunities within the business. Rhiannon concludes “We value diverse experiences, strengths and capabilities, recognising the richness of thought diversity brings. Our goal is to embrace a broad spectrum of skills.”
What advice would BTTC give other organisations?
“Job coaching is a fantastic opportunity that benefits everyone involved. It supports our local communities by helping people gain employment, and it provides our employees with valuable training and coaching opportunities, enhancing their skills and offering the satisfaction of giving back. BTTC also benefits by aligning this initiative with our TOMs* framework, supporting our CSR** strategy, and reinforcing the values we hold dear. We highly recommend organisations consider participating in this impactful programme,” says Rhiannon.
Despite being an SME, BTTC are leading the way when it comes to giving back to their community with skilled based volunteering.
