What climate action does the public want from business?

This factsheet shares headline findings from BITC and YouGov research into public and business perceptions and priorities around corporate climate action.

Business in the Community (BITC) commissioned YouGov to help us understand public and business perceptions and priorities around corporate climate action. The headlines in this factsheet clearly demonstrate the need for businesses to take rapid climate action. It also shows a need to think critically about how they act to ensure the transition to a resilient, net-zero UK is fair and enables people and nature to thrive.

This document sets out the headline results of our research. In January 2022 BITC will publish a full analysis that will dig deeper into regional and demographic trends. This will identify priorities for UK businesses across all regions and will be used to create collaborative action projects that will help deliver a fair and just transition. Two nationally representative surveys were commissioned with YouGov in Autumn 2021 with the aim of assessing the perceptions and priorities of the general public and business when it comes to corporate climate action. Our aim was to get a better understanding of

  • public attitudes to and awareness of the climate crisis and business action to address it
  • actions the public has taken to reduce their carbon footprint and the barriers they face to do so
  • perceptions of fairness, change, and preparedness
  • priorities for the public for a fair and just transition to a resilient, net-zero UK.

These headline findings highlight key trends for responsible businesses. Crucially, they confirm that how we act is just as important as what we do. This is why BITC has produced its Seven Steps for Business Climate Action to help inspire and support every business.

Business in the Community and climate action

Every single business in the UK must take action to avert the climate crisis. Our network of hundreds of businesses is working with us right now to make the climate crisis history. What we do is important, but how we do it is equally critical. We must make sure the transition to a resilient, net-zero UK is fair and just, truly enabling people and nature to thrive.

By joining the hundreds of other businesses in the Prince’s Responsible Business Network, you can accelerate progress, maximise business opportunities and enable the communities you serve to thrive.
