Efforts to champion and embed gender equality must recognise the barriers faced by different identities at different life stages to drive impact.
Women in the UK continue to carry out unequal responsibility for care, yet 95% of UK employees surveyed in our BITC research stated they believe caring responsibilities should be shared equally, regardless of gender.

With unequal care driving 70% of the gender pay gap, employers must consider how to better support equalised care to progress gender equality. Access our resources on supporting working parents and the business case for equal parental leave.

Resources to take action:

To progress gender equality, businesses must embrace flexible and agile working, making this the default, not the exception – and accessible to a wide array of working women in many sectors.

Greater access to high-quality flexible working options is essential to increase employment levels and retain people in the workforce, remaining the second most important factor for employees choosing a job.

Access our resources on intersectional flexible working and look to best practice implementation through our case studies on making flexible work, work for all.

Resources to take action:

At the current rate of progress, it is estimated to take another 40 years to close the Gender Pay Gap in the UK.

To enact the change required pay and reward frameworks, including approaches towards performance reviews, should be designed to minimise the risk of gender bias.

While many organisations aspire to inclusive working cultures, there is often a distinct misalignment between aspirations and employee’s experiences. Gender-inclusion not only supports the removal of barriers to distinct to women but benefits all gender identities.

However, persistent inequities such as unacceptable rates of workplace sexual harassment, bullying and discrimination place gender inclusion at risk.

Equal Parental Leave

Our Who Cares? Research found that an average 95% of UK employees believe that caring responsibilities should be shared equally regardless of gender. Considering this, there is a drastic discrepancy in the wants of the workforce and reality of care, where we discovered 85% of sole carers for children are women.  With unequal parental leave driving an estimated 70% of the workforce gender pay gap, addressing this systemic barrier is an imperative for employers committed to tackling gender inequality in their workforce.

BITC has partnered with BITC member Bain & Co to develop a specialised suite of resources to support employers embarking on a journey towards implementing an infrastructure that enables and empowers all parents, regardless of gender, to take time out to care for their children. Explore this Equal Parental Leave toolkit and other resources for equal parental leave below.

Equal pay

At Business in the Community (BITC) we encourage all employers to talk openly about the gender pay gap, the average gap between men and women’s earnings in the UK. With this information legally required for organisations of 250 employees or more, and made available publicly, disclosing your organisation’s Gender Pay Gap, the key drivers behind it and key steps you are taking to close it, is vital to educate and inform your workforce and maintain employee trust.

We have created the Gender Pay Gap Reporting Dashboard to help encourage this transparency. The dashboard includes live information about the overall national gender pay gap for this year. You can also explore individual employer’s gender pay gap data as well as trends via sector
